Eye of the Beholder: Beauty, Body Horror, and Women’s Empowerment in Shōjo Manga

Awards: John and Susan Ausley Scholarship, Mart P. Hill Award for Outstanding English Honors Thesis

Honors thesis project focused on examining the visual functions of body horror as expressions of woman’s discomfort with the societal role of womanhood in two shōjo manga: Tomie by Junji Ito and Helter Skelter by Kyoko Okazaki. Examines how the actions undertaken by their protagonists inspire self-determination and liberation for young women.
